Little Ponton Update (03/11/17) - Edition 1

Sally Morris & Rebecca Creasey

Winter OSR

Django – One of the cleanest new conventional KWS varieties at Little Ponton RTC

Architect – This Limagrain hybrid has a high GAI, with a high leaf number and very low phoma levels.

After closely monitoring 6 of the 39 varieties at Little Ponton, a rating based on disease levels and GAI has been created:

  • Campus – 6/10
  • Django – 7/10
  • Architect – 9/10
  • DK Secret – 8/10
  • DK Impressario – 8/10
  • DK Exalte – 6/10
All the winter OSR varieties at Little Ponton have reached 7-9 true leaves. Although there is little difference between the varieties in terms of growth stage, some varieties have larger leaves and therefore have higher GAI’s. Of the conventional varieties, Butterfly has one of the largest GAI’s, with Django following closely behind. Campus looks relatively small in the plots, however, the crop surrounding the trial area is also Campus and that is looking well, with a very high GAI. The hybrid varieties Architect, DK Exclaim and DK Impressario all have high GAI’s.

Phoma levels are low at Little Ponton, with an average of 2% disease recorded. The Clearfield varieties DK Imperial and DK Impressario are among the cleanest varieties on show.

Winter Wheat

The plots have now been drilled and will be assessed in the next few weeks.
